Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma took on asthma, and now we’re taking home an award.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation Corporate Citizenship Awards showcase how businesses make the world a better place. Companies and chambers of commerce from around the globe are considered for this recognition.
The Corporate Citizenship Award recognizes our Enhancing Care for Children with Asthma project, a community asthma management program.
The asthma project was created after analysis of our member claims data showed that asthma is one of the most prevalent conditions plaguing our members, leading to both cost and stress for patients and their families.
For more than three years, we’ve partnered with the American Lung Association in Oklahoma to deliver community-based programs aimed at improving the health of children with asthma.
We used our claims data to identify areas with high instances of pediatric asthma. We then worked with the American Lung Association to recruit clinics in those areas. The project delivers training and resources to these clinics.
The project has reduced unnecessary hospitalizations and emergency department visits, while improving health for young people with asthma.
